Should you care New iPad first tablet with Bluetooth 4.0?

Fri, 03/09/2012 - 5:30PM by batterylaptoppower 0 Comments - 3 Views

Unless you've been living under a rock, no doubt you've heard all about Apple's new iPad. It comes packed with plenty of welcome upgrades. Among these are a crisp Retina display, a new A5X processor with quad-core graphics to drive all those pixels, and an optional 4G LTE connection for swift cellular data. What slipped under the radar, though, was the iPad's Bluetooth 4.0 support.

In fact, the new iPad is the first tablet with Bluetooth 4.0, aka Bluetooth Smart Ready. Not exactly impressed? Well, I admit that Bluetooth tech has faded from people's minds as a hot mobile feature. This new Bluetooth version, however, promises to bring a host of attractive features.

Tablets, Bluetooth, and you
The most notable new ability of Bluetooth 4.0 devices is to sip power slowly, especially gadgets designed to operate as sensors. These include gizmos that measure fitness performance such as heart rate and activity like the Motorola Motoactv and Nike FuelBand.

This may not sound like much at first, but imagine coming home from a long day trekking all over town, a quick run, or time spent at the gym. Fiddling with cords and PCs to log a workout is likely the last thing you'll want to do at this moment. Thankfully, these fitness products are designed to talk to your iPad via wireless connection and automatically update your stats via apps running tabletside.

In my experience tablets rarely get switched off and typically are persistently connected to Wi-Fi networks, so it makes perfect sense for a slate to serve as a Bluetooth hub in the home. That's precisely how a Bluetooth Smart Ready device is envisioned to operate, as a nerve center for multiple peripherals.

Appy to be home
Of course intelligent home appliances running space-age software isn't a new idea. Heck, Samsung and LG have been building smart fridges for years.

Another big difference with this latest form of Bluetooth though, according to industry special interest group the Bluetooth SIG, is now it's an honest-to-goodness platform and supports app development and upgrades over time. Essentially, hardware makers should be able to build applications from a unified and open standard. Additionally, accessories and appliances originally made for one purpose can conceivably be morphed for new uses never intended by the manufacturer.

The home "appcessory" revolution has already begun. App-controlled coffee from the kitchen faucet? Yep that's in the works. Your kids not cleaning their teeth properly, there's an app-powered widget for that as well, the Beam Bluetooth 4.0 toothbrush.

Fri, 02/17/2012 - 7:59PM by batterylaptoppower 0 Comments - 3 Views

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif has announced provision of free laptops to disabled students receiving higher education. He said these laptops had been designed specially for disabled persons, which will aid them in acquiring modern education.

The CM gave directions to commissioners with regards to evolving a procedure for distribution of laptops among disabled students within seven days.

He said this while presiding over a meeting at Arfa Software Technology Park on Friday.

Shahbaz also ordered laptops for 22 students of Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) who were not provided laptops under the scheme launched by the Punjab government.

He said that Special Assistant on Higher Education Zaeem Qadri and Higher Education secretary should visit all districts of the province so that the problems being faced by the students regarding provision of laptops could immediately be resolved.

He further directed the commissioners to dispose of all necessary matters relating to distribution of laptops to educational institutions in their respective divisions within a week and submit a report in this regard.

The CM said that students were being given laptops in recognition of their hard work and talent, adding that the Punjab government will continue such schemes in order to facilitate and encourage talented students.

He urged the students to devote their energies to acquiring knowledge and take full advantage of educational schemes such as the laptop scheme initiated by the provincial government.

Provincial Education Minister Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, Special Assistant on Higher Education Zaeem Qadri, Planning and Development chairman, Higher Education secretary, Punjab Information Technology Board chairman, Lahore commissioner, Dr Zafar Iqbal Qureshi and 22 students of LCWU attended the meeting.

The students while praising the CM for initiating the laptop scheme said the facility would help them keep in touch with the modern world and latest knowledge.

Separately, while talking to a 45-member delegation of print and electronic media of Sindh led by Sukkur Press Club President Lala Asad Pathan on Friday, the CM said that prosperity of the country depended upon prosperity of all the four provinces as well as Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. He said that joys and sorrows of the people living in different places were common. He said the country could be put on the road to progress and transformed into an Islamic welfare state in the real sense only through promotion of national solidarity and an atmosphere of unity and brotherhood.

Shahbaz said that loot and corruption was rampant in the country and corruption was the root cause of poverty. He said there was a need to root out corruption and utilise resources for the welfare and betterment of the masses. He added that “new elections” were solution of country’s problems. He said that immediate steps were needed to remove the sense of deprivation among Balochs and there was a need to move in this direction with commitment, tolerance and sincerity.

MNA Pervaiz Malik, Adviser on Education Zaeem Hussain Qadri and MPA Dr Asad Ashraf were also present on the occasion.

The CM said that Sindh was the land of Sufi saints and it had played an important role in the struggle for creation of Pakistan. He welcomed the delegation of Sindhi brethren in Lahore and said that such visits were of vital importance for the promotion of inter-provincial harmony. He said that National Finance Commission Award was approved unanimously last year, displaying a spirit of sacrifice by the leadership at federal and provincial levels and in order to promote cohesion and amity between the provinces. Punjab surrendered its share of 11 billion rupees and the same spirit had to be displayed for the solution of other problems.

Lala Asad Pathan appreciated the CM for taking public welfare initiatives. He also extended invitation to the CM to visit Sukkar, which he accepted.

Global Smartphone Sales are Taking Over the World

Wed, 02/15/2012 - 6:30PM by batterylaptoppower 0 Comments - 2 Views

According to research firm Gartner, global smartphone sales in the fourth quarter surged ahead by 47.3 percent over 2010 levels to 149 million units. On an annual basis 2011 smartphone sales were up by 58 percent at 472 million units.

The main contributor to the astonishing growth was the record-breaking sales by Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhones taking it to the number three spot in overall mobile phone sales. Apple achieved pole position in smartphone sales – it had a 23.8 percent market share in the fourth quarter and 19 percent across 2011 as a whole. “Western Europe and North America led most of the smartphone growth for Apple during the fourth quarter of 2011,” said Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner. “In Western Europe the spike in iPhone sales in the fourth quarter saved the overall smartphone market after two consecutive quarters of slow sales.”

A look at the market shares (all mobiles) reveals that major losers of market shares in both the fourth quarter and overall 2011 were Nokia (NYSE:NOK) and LG – while Apple and Samsung added on market share.

Smartphone analysis, available for the fourth quarter segregated by operating system, reveals that Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and iOs crushed the market – increasing shares from 30.5 percent to 50.9 percent and from 15.8 percent to 23.8 percent, respectively. Symbian and RIM (NASDAQ:RIMM) simply fell by the wayside under the onslaught, collectively losing all of 27 percent in market share.

Here’s how these stocks are reacting to the news:

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL): AAPL shares recently traded at $515.69, up $6.23, or 1.22%. They have traded in a 52-week range of $310.50 to $509.56. Volume today was 23,658,804 shares versus a 3-month average volume of 12,486,500 shares. The company’s trailing P/E is 14.89, while trailing earnings are $35.14 per share.

Report: Apple iPad 3 is rumored for March 7 launch

Mon, 02/13/2012 - 7:44PM by batterylaptoppower 0 Comments - 7 Views

And the launch date of the Apple iPad 3 will be? For the record, Apple hasn't said yet, but the latest rumor is that the iPad 3 (or whatever it will be called) will be unveiled March 7.

On Monday, the website iMore reported that "sources who have been reliable in the past" told it that Apple's next iPad will launch March 7 and pack a retina display with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels, a quad-cord processor and "possibly 4G LTE networking."

The retina display, the quad-core CPU and the 4G rumors all line up with the speculation that has been circulating for months, but iMore's report of a March 7 launch date is new. Shortly after, Apple-centric blog The Loop quoted iMore's report and simply added, "Yep."

Apple, which has a policy of not commenting on rumors, did not respond to requests for comment Monday afternoon.

The March 7 rumor arrives less than a week after the tech news site AllThingsD reported that the iPad was set to launch sometime in the first week of March and was likely go on sale "a week or so after the event."

Stay tuned. When Apple does officially announce the next iPad's unveiling, we'll let you know.

Valentine's Day: Best Gift gadget to amuse your beloved

Sun, 02/12/2012 - 11:59PM by batterylaptoppower 0 Comments - 2 Views

Woman would be more pleased to receive electronics rather than traditional gifts, like roses and chocolates, on Valentine's Day, according to a new study.

The study from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) found that women's interest in technology has increased in the last five years, with eight in 10 women now expressing an interest in consumer electronics (CE) products.

Nearly half of those (41 per cent) said they were "very interested" in CE. This is an increase of 10 percentage points over the previous study in 2007.

Though men continue to outspend women on overall CE purchases, the gap between genders is shrinking, the study found.

On average, men spent 728 dollars on CE purchases in the past 12 months while women spent 667 dollars during the same period, a difference of 61 dollars. In the previous study the CE spending gap was closer to 200 dollars.

Women also exert a significant amount of influence on CE purchases. Six out of 10 women initiate or are involved in CE product purchase decisions.

Women, however, are far less likely to claim ownership of most CE products.

The study shows that women are more likely to consider CE products as "household" products, meaning they consider ownership of the device, such as TVs and DVD players, to be shared with a spouse, partner, roommate or child.

But when it comes to newer and mobile technologies, such as e-readers, notebook computers and smartphones, women were more likely than men to claim sole ownership.

"This Valentine's Day, the way to a woman's heart just might be through electronics," said Jessica Boothe, the CEA manager of strategic research.

"Women want technology more than ever and they view electronics as very personal devices that can be toted around and customized with private information," Boothe added.

Will Apple iPad 3 coming with Siri and larger screen ?

Fri, 02/10/2012 - 10:19PM by batterylaptoppower 0 Comments - 5 Views

Steve Jobs, the late longtime CEO of Apple, never cared for a 7-inch iPad, saying "the screen is too small to express the software." But the company may be taking a second look with the success of the Amazon Kindle Fire.

Stories have already been spreading about the upcoming iPad 3. AllThingsD reported that Apple plans to introduce the iPad 3 during the first full week of March, and will start to sell it a week later. Sources said the company will introduce the tablet at a special event in San Francisco, most likely at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Apple’s preferred location.

Also, analyst Ezra Gottheil predicts that the company will launch a 7-inch iPad later in the year that may contain a wireless keyboard-case. "[The next iPad] will have a higher-resolution screen that Apple will call a Retina display, even if it's not," said Gottheil, according to Computerworld. "That's important to Apple because it means the iPad will work well in their home theater play, since it will display full HD."

Gottheil said he didn’t believe the iPad 3’s processor would be quad-core because of the power requirements, and thinks Apple is more likely to use a faster dual-core system. He expected Siri to be available, and predicts the company will continue to sell the iPad 2 with Wi-Fi only and 16GB of flash storage space for around $400.

Despite Apple's recent incredible sales numbers, the iPad is still losing market share to tablets on Androids. The Los Angeles Times reported that Apple sold 15.43 million iPads in the fourth quarter of 2011, but statistics show the iPad's share of the tablet market dropped from 68.2 percent to 57.6 percent in the fourth quarter, while Androids went from 29 percent in 2010 to 39.1 percent.

According to Apple Insider, images of the upcoming device have been showing up on the Internet. Reported back panel images showed different mounts for the logic board and a different camera and LCD display, along with a bigger battery.  Pictures did not indicate any form changes, and there is a photo of a high-resolution LCD panel.

New laptop Technology : Asus U32U notebook

Wed, 02/08/2012 - 12:58AM by batterylaptoppower 0 Comments - 17 Views

We’ve got neatly classified genres in laptops, notebooks – the normal ones, ultrabooks – ultra thin, but ultra expensive, and netbooks – cheap and portable, but relatively small and with lesser power. But, what do you get when there’s a cross between the good points of an ultrabook and a netbook. Yes, something that’s not too small, not too expensive and is quite thin. You get something that looks like the new Asus U32U notebook. But, does this one withstand our litmus test? Let’s find out.

Design and Build Quality

The U32U comes dressed up in a dual tone colour of silver and black. The exterior has a matte finish to it, so fingerprints aren’t too much of a problem. The interiors have also been well designed. The U32U has a demure, modest look with the shades they’ve chosen, but that doesn’t make it any less appealing.

30% DISCOUNT NOW , High quality Dell latitude e6400 Battery , 7800mAh , 11.1V  ,only: £ 50.78

The left side consists of a USB 2.0 slot, an HDMI slot, and a VGA port along with a heatsink vent. The right consists of a Kensington lock, the power slot, an Ethernet port, two USB 3.0 slots, a headphone jack, the SD card slot and a microphone jack. The inclusion of an Ethernet port is good news, as the laptop tapers out towards the end. But this form factor also means that the DVD writer slot needs to be eliminated.

The LCD panel has some good support with two sturdy hinges. They’re quite strong and tough and offer some good resistance to the screen wobbling problem that we so often see in laptops. The 13.3-inch screen itself has been reinforced pretty well from all sides. It’s thin, but durable. There’s some good amount of metal on the bottom panel as well.

The design may appear to be plain to some, but it didn’t disappoint us one bit. Also, the thin profile gives the U32U that oomph, which we mostly reserve only for Ultrabooks, like the Zenbook UX31, we reviewed earlier. Obviously, it’s not as thin as that one, but we’ll suggest you have a look at the price tags before you complain. In terms of build as well, the UX32U impressed us quite a lot.

Features

The notebook is powered by an AMD E-450 APU at a clock speed of 1.65 GHz. It’s got a whopping 8GB (!) of RAM and a 320GB hard disk. The U32U comes with an integrated graphics card – the AMD Radeon HD 6320 and has a display resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. Connectivity options, include a camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth. All this is held together by the 64-bit Windows 7 operating system.

The U32U comes with a few pre-installed software. There’s the AMD VISION engine control centre that’s basically your one stop shop for all your tweakings and settings. It’s got a range of presets also including – gaming, battery saver and web browsing. Asus also have included a few utility softwares, including USB charger plus, a recovery app, boot optimizer software and a secure delete application. It’s well loaded with the basic stuff you’ll require to configure and manage your laptop.

Review: Kindle Fire sales are predicted to beat all other tablets in 2012

Mon, 02/06/2012 - 11:53PM by batterylaptoppower 0 Comments - 2 Views

According to Jumptap, tablet traffic increased greatly over the holidays into the new year.  It predicts more cheap tablet traffic and reported Android growth and app usage.

Table traffic jumped 229 percent over an average projected for the day after Christmas,.

January 2, 2012 also saw a 263 percentage traffic increase – most likely from recipients uploading holiday photos and getting familiar with their tablets, noted JumpTap.

Jumptap found that the Kindle Fire showed greatest tablet growth throughout December. The Kindle Fire held 10 percent of tablet market share on December 1 and finished the year with 30 percent market share. This year-end surge suggests a 2012 trend for lower-priced tablets.

This information is confirms what Pew Research found, he share of adults in the United States who own tablets or eReaders nearly doubled. Other research showed that the Kindle Fire is not an iPad replacement but primarily used as and eReader.

The Kindle Fire was hottest selling and most-wished-for item on Amazon and named the most-gifted-promoted tablet by Wireless and Mobile News. Kindle Fire sales are predicted to beat all other tablets in 2012.

January MobileSTAT reported  that

  • Android’s share grew 21 percentage points (38 percent in December ’10 to 59 percent in December ’11), while iOS dropped 7 percentage points (29 percent in December ’10 to 22 percent in December ’11).
  • iOS tripled in overall traffic on the Jumptap network of more than 95 million unique visitors, while Android more than quadrupled.
  • Newer iOS versions see higher click-through rates than their Android counterparts. iOS5, the latest version of the Apple OS, has a CTR of approximately .91 percent, while the latest Android OS, 3.x, has a .59 percent CTR.
  • The app vs. mobile web debate still has many industry players picking sides. The January MobileSTAT shows that both are growing at similar rates with no signs of slowing.

Smartphones : What can Intel bring to the smartphone market?

Fri, 02/03/2012 - 1:04AM by batterylaptoppower 0 Comments - 4 Views

The Coca-Cola Company missed a trick about a decade ago. Whilst its main product, the beverage of its company’s name, was the best selling cola, its main rival was quicker to spot something it didn’t.

Pepsi, off the back of rebrands of middling successes, spotted that the market was moving away from brown fizzy drinks. Instead, demand was growing for healthy alternatives, or just something different to drink. Pepsi, thus, diversified quicker and more successfully, leaving The Coca-Cola Company playing catch-up. It lost the cola battle, but had more joy in the broader soft drink war.

In the processor market, then, AMD has long since been left in Intel’s rear-view mirror. With the flawed released of its Bulldozer architecture, AMD’s processors are fighting a tough battle in both the server and desktop spaces. And while it’s doing that, its main rival – Intel – is expanding still further into other areas. It’s dominating its current market, and diversifying too.

Money

Intel recently announced record profits for 2011, with net revenues of $54 billion and net income of $12.9 billion. The firm is now making over $1 billion in profit every calendar month, and in its main business area, it looks set to retain a very healthy lead for some time to come.

Laurels are not being rested on, though. Keen to diversify its business where possible, Intel announced at the start of 2012 that it was looking to move into the smartphone market. Given that this is an area of the technology business where growth is still ferocious, it’s perhaps surprising it’s taken so long to make its move. Yet it has, as you might expect, ambitious plans.

The firm has already announced deals with both Lenovo and Motorola Mobility (itself now a part of the Google empire, assuming regulatory clearance), and Intel CEO Paul Otellini showcased one of the first fruits of these partnerships, the Lenovo K800 smartphone, at CES back in January.

The K800 is a phone running Android, and packed inside is a new Intel Atom processor variant. It’s nothing in itself to send the likes of Apple and Samsung back to the drawing board, and you sense that there’s a tricky battle ahead for Intel. But it’s nonetheless a significant move, and the starting point for something set to be a whole lot more substantive.

The firm left people in no doubt: Intel was looking to break the smartphone market, and was going to do its damnedest to do so.

The benefit?

The question, though, is what can Intel bring to the smartphone market, outside of its brand name?

Where Intel has succeeded in the processor market over the past five years or so, and where AMD has stumbled, is in marrying up efficiency and performance. From the release of the Core 2 line, it’s successfully embraced the possibilities of multi-core processors, bringing to a stop the brute force arms race of speed at all costs in the field of CPUs (although it made more than a few mistakes before it changed course onto that particular path).

That said, even its current range of processors were still regarded as too power-hungry for smartphones, in spite of the success Intel enjoyed with earlier variants of its Atom CPUs in netbook computers.

However, its acquisition of Infineon Technologies’ Wireless Solutions business at the start of 2011 (which it named its Intel Mobile Communications unit) in turn kick started the latest evolution in Intel’s plans. For Wireless Solutions’ expertise was in providing the key technologies required on a single, small, energy efficient chip. It was, perhaps, the missing part of the Intel jigsaw.

Competition

What Intel will immediately bring to the smartphone market, then, is some heavy competition. Appreciating that it’s a long way behind the market leader in this sector, ARM, it’s nonetheless put itself in a strong position to compete.

Signing up Lenovo and Motorola Mobility, granted, is hardly likely to make too much of a dent, but the firm is clearly eyeing further tie-ups, that will see its technology at the heart of a fleet of smartphone and tablet devices.

Intel is likely to focus on keeping such products as slim as possible, with its commitment to Ultrabook products (which again, puts it head to head with AMD) already known. Intel has, after all, already declared that 2012 will be the year of the Ultrabook, complete with touchscreen and voice recognition technology, and it takes no genius to tie together the inroads in one area of the market with plans for the other.

Nor does it take a genius to conclude what Intel’s driving reason for entering this market in the first place is. The dominance of ARM in a sector that’s set to see smartphone sales overtake PC and laptops in 2012 means there’s a sizeable pie that Intel has very little of. With a large warchest to do battle with, and with its technology now in place, the next few years will see a heavy Intel assault on the sector, as it seeks to further grow those record profits.

In order to do so, it’ll need to provide some compelling technology or financial incentive for partners to side with it (ideally both), and that’s where, hopefully, the benefits will trickle down to the end customer. Intel’s track record in the processor market has rarely seen it be the cheaper, but its research and development work, combined with its price competitiveness, is bound to cause ramifications in the broader market.

ARM’s move?

The short term, though, will see Intel attempting to sign up more partners, and trying to convince them that its alternative is both relevant and worthwhile. What’s perhaps, the more intriguing question now is just how will ARM react to a major, cash-rich company taking it on, head to head?

Top tips to extend laptop battery life

Wed, 02/01/2012 - 11:57PM by batterylaptoppower 0 Comments - 2 Views

Q: I got a new laptop battery. What is the best way to condition it? I use my laptop as a desktop with a port replicator. It's always plugged in. - Brian

A: Battery technology has come a long way from the days of having to carefully ‘condition' a new battery when we first got it to maximize its storage capabilities. Conditioning is performed by fully powering and discharging the battery in succession a couple of times.

Today's laptop batteries are generally lithium-ion based (look for ‘Li-ion' on the battery itself) which is far less susceptible to the traditional ‘memory' and idle discharge issues that older NiCad (nickel cadmium) and NiMH (nickel metal hydride) suffered from.

Li-ion batteries represent the best power-to-weight ratio and life cycle for your personal electronics, but all batteries lose their storage capacity over time based on how they are used and stored.

Because you are using your laptop as a desktop computer, you are plugged into the wall all the time posing the question: Should I remove the battery when I'm plugged in?

(Note: some older laptop designs won't power the laptop at all unless the battery is installed which makes the question pointless.)

The upside to keeping the battery installed while plugged into the wall is you get protection against a power outage. If you remove the battery during general operation, you would want to make sure that you are plugging the laptop into an external battery backup system that would keep you from losing your unsaved work in the event of a power outage.

If you leave your computer plugged in for more than two weeks at a time, the conventional wisdom is to remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry climate.

If you plan on storing a battery for an extended period of time, make sure it has been discharged to 30-50 percent of capacity and store it in temperatures between 70 and 75 degrees. Avoid storing rechargeable batteries fully charged or fully discharged as either can cause permanent capacity loss or deactivate the built-in protection circuit.

Some folks have heard that you should store them in your refrigerator, but I would recommend against it. Humidity will reduce the life of the battery and keeping it in the fridge can introduce humidity, especially when you pull the battery out to be used.

You should always avoid using a battery when the battery itself is really cold or really hot (wait for it to return to room temperature). Heat is the No. 1 cause of reduced battery life, which takes us back to you using your laptop always plugged in.

If you keep the battery installed while you are plugged in for extended periods of time, it will keep the battery in a heated condition during that extended period when it could have been resting in a calm, cool, submissive state (with my regards to Cesar Millan!) thereby extending its life.

Another way to reduce the battery life is to use the wrong power pack to charge it. If you use a third-party charger that charges your battery at a higher rate than the factory charger, it will diminish the life of the battery.

For those that like to use their laptop in bed or on a pillow in your lap, you will likely be restricting the airflow which increases the operating temperature and will also reduce the life of the battery if done often.

In the end, if you simply focus on reducing the heat that your battery is exposed to whenever possible and make sure you store the battery properly, you will extend the useful life of the battery.
